1SG (R) Christopher Hewitt

Air Defense Artillery · United States Army · 1990s–2000s

1SG (R) Christopher Hewitt sat down with me for Heroes I Know.

Wednesday night. Warriors of the Pass. Joe Benson on the clap machine. I called him the most interesting first sergeant in the world. He was already on his third beer.

HRC Knox. A new sergeant major asked if there was anything she should know. He said he would do anything the Army told him. One exception. He does not work January 8th. That is Elvis's birthday. Every year after that he found a way. Kuwait. Qatar. Even as a civilian he turns the phone off.

Ron Swanson is on the dining room wall. The Pyramid of Greatness. He fishes. He does not hunt. He is a good luck charm on a boat. The other guy catches everything.

His father was Robert Hewitt. A cabin at Lake Whitney that the grandfather built by hand in the fifties and sixties. Cheap. Funny. That is the house he came from.

Japan. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. They call it the only Marine Corps air station in the world. The top floor of the command building is where they pushed the order for Pearl Harbor. He was walking downtown on December 7th. Red beard. Nobody would make eye contact.

Fort Hood. Field sanitation NCO. He drove the regimental sergeant major around a warfighter. Wilbur Adams. General Costello. Korea in 1999 and 2000. An N64. Wrestlemania 2000. It took him five times to get into PLC.

He keeps a list. Optimus Prime. Johnny Cash. The VA for assigning him to an OBGYN. A soldier who looked at a fire extinguisher bracket in the turret and asked if it was the cup holder.

Michael Cornish. Joe Benson. We signed off. That is why we hit record. Get the story on tape before we are too old or too sick to tell it.
