CSM (R) Sidney Weatherspoon

Air Defense Artillery · United States Army · 1970s–2000s

CSM (R) Sidney Weatherspoon sat down with me for Heroes Live. Sixty-three minutes. He was my command sergeant major in Korea when I was a first sergeant. Brigade level. I looked at him like a granddad.

Fort St. Joe, Florida. Population about twenty-five hundred. Born Panama City. He will not give the year. Back when men were men, he says.

El Paso. Basic. AIT. 16 Hotel. Patriot later at Bliss. Could not stand it. Still does not like it. He wanted Vulcan. They said you are going to be Patriot. Fort Lewis was a Vulcan battalion. Different world between HIMAD and SHORAD.

Desert Storm. First ones from the battalion on a C-5 from Bliss to Saudi. Iraq had invaded Kuwait. He was already gone. Family went through the Red Cross. He had not talked to them in two and a half years. Germany. Having a good time.

Wife's people in Prattville. Thank you, Sergeant Major. That is why we hit record. Get the story on tape before we are too old or too sick to tell it.
