Firing the Vulcan
An essay by William Marshall
Posted on Facebook
Firing the Vulcan weapon system was like sitting on a Star Wars spacecraft spitting lasers into the void. Only way louder than you can ever imagine.
It was also a very technical job. For something that worked so poorly, we had to know a whole bunch about the radar and how to calibrate and use it.
Manual mode was our favorite. Three thousand rounds a minute. Kentucky windage, but with a scope stabilized with a gyro. Yessir.
That military occupational specialty was my favorite, I think. I loved that Vulcan. 16R2P. P was for Paratrooper.
