Glenn Ferguson

18th Airborne Corps · 82nd Airborne · United States Army · French Foreign Legion · 1988–

Glenn Ferguson sat down with me for Heroes I Know. Ninety-one minutes. Scotland on the other end of the line.

Eighteen. 1988. Straight out of high school into the French Foreign Legion. He was afraid if he joined the U.S. forces in peacetime he would never see anything. Nine months after he signed he was in regiment. Infantry first. Then a cavalry regiment. Then the Gulf.

Junior NCO. American. They made him liaison between the Legion and the 82nd. Cross-trained weapons with our NCOs. After the Gulf he came over. 18th Airborne Corps. 82nd. Not a Ranger. He corrected me on that. He was already what he needed to be.

The Legion still fights. Iraq. Afghanistan. West Africa. Officers used to take the high medals. Enlisted took what sat under that. He knows what the second-highest looks like from the ground.

Retired. Wife is Scottish. They migrated. Yankees, they call him. He laughs. Thank you, Glenn. That is why we hit record. Get the story on tape before we are too old or too sick to tell it.
