1SG (R) Greg Allen
3-4 ADA, 82nd Airborne · United States Army · 1980s–2000s

1SG (R) Greg Allen sat down with me for Heroes I Know. Sixty-one minutes. A legend in 3-4. Jumpmaster. Airborne. He continues to tell it like it is.
Born on Hay Street. Fayetteville. Central North Carolina. Womack was too busy so they sent his mother down to Hay Street. Right behind where Rick's Lounge was. He joined at seventeen. High school done. Army right away.
He did not go straight to airborne school. Two basics. Army Security Agency first. The weird guys. Spooks. Fort Devens. Then the rest of it. Korea in January of 1990. He left right before the Gulf War. I got to Korea right after he left.
Pasco Hilton was the first sergeant. Jose Chopper the commander. Lopez the squad leader. They woke up and found out they had parked the brigade headquarters inside of a minefield. That slowed them down a little. The day before they had been on a fifty-five mile an hour road march.
I don't know anybody more old school paratrooper. Lovers and haters. Like NASCAR. Who cares. The slideshow is still here. The conversation is the story. Thank you, Greg. That is why we hit record. Get the story on tape before we are too old or too sick to tell it.
