Air Defense News

The best of the air-defense fight, pulled from the United States, Ukraine, Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific. Not press releases. What matters to the people who actually shoot.

Magazine depth is strategy now.

Patriot, THAAD, Aster, David’s Sling — none of it matters if the canister is empty on night three. Production contracts are the real air-defense news.

SHORAD is back on the main stage.

Stinger replacement, SGT Stout buys, Increment 4, lasers, and cheap interceptors are all the same sentence: the low-altitude fight against drones and cruise missiles is where units live or die.

Homeland and forward are the same network.

Golden Dome is writing Patriot and IBCS into the United States. That will pull batteries, people, and interceptors. Plan for it.

Allies are shopping Israeli and European kits because American delivery dates slipped.

Greece, Romania, Estonia, Czechia, Denmark — watch who buys what. It tells you where the U.S. industrial base is late.

Washington moves to triple PAC-3 MSE and quadruple THAAD

The U.S. signed seven-year framework deals with Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics to rebuild the interceptor pile that two wars have burned down. PAC-3 MSE production is slated to triple. THAAD interceptors are slated to quadruple. Minimum annual quantities are locked so the supply chain can hire, tool, and buy steel instead of waiting on one-year money.

That is the story under every other story this month. Ukraine is short. Europe is short. Patriot batteries in the Middle East ran hot against Iran. CSIS put the prewar U.S. Patriot interceptor stock near 2,330 and the wartime remainder in the 759–827 range. You cannot defend three theaters with a magazine built for one.

Greece signs the Achilles Shield deal

Athens locked a roughly €3 billion / $3.5 billion Israeli package — David’s Sling, Barak MX, and Spyder — as the core of a layered air, missile, and anti-drone net aimed at Turkey and Iran. Reports call it Israel’s largest defense export. Czech officials are separately shopping Spyder and Arrow.

NGSRI is a two-horse race — and the Army just widened it

Lockheed’s QuadStar seeker flew a tactical profile at White Sands and held track past legacy Stinger range. Raytheon says every guided NGSRI round in its July test hit. The Army still wants more designs on the range next year. Milestone C is slated around FY28. This is the missile that will sit on SGT Stout, on the shoulder, and in the next increment of the short-range fight.

The ballistic gap is the story

Kyiv resumed publishing intercept numbers after Zelensky said a few Patriot missiles arrived from the “Coalition of the Willing.” Air defense had gone quiet on ballistic tallies after a raid where none of 28 projectiles were stopped. Italy is reported to be sending next-generation SAMP/T and Aster 30. Russia is pushing Iskander-1000 and nightly drone-and-missile salvos. Ukraine knocked out Pantsir-S1 batteries and radars in late August while asking, again, for interceptors rather than statements.

A 34-minute shoot-down — and a funding fight

Gen. Michael Guetlein says Golden Dome hardware “shot down everything we put in the air in a matter of 34 minutes.” About 90 percent of the first $22–25 billion is obligated. First operational site work is underway at Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story, Virginia. An Army air-defense battalion has been picked as the initial Golden Dome unit for a mid-2028 fight. FY27 money is the open question. Patriot and IBCS are being written into the homeland architecture, not just the overseas one.

HYDEF clears feasibility. Estonia shops a billion-euro net.

Europe’s HYDEF hypersonic interceptor passed its Preliminary Requirements Review on 26 August. Critical tech is at least TRL 3, with a TRL 6 prototype as the next aim. Spain, Germany, Belgium, Norway, and Poland are in. Stage one closes in Madrid on 22 October. Estonia is weighing Patriot, SAMP/T, and David’s Sling for a ballistic buy that could top €1 billion, with a preliminary decision expected in September. Denmark already chose SAMP/T NG over Patriot on delivery timeline.

New counter-drone radar — and Pantsirs dying in pairs

Moscow says series production of a new swarm-optimized counter-drone radar is starting. Same week, Ukrainian strikes claimed two Pantsir-S1 systems back-to-back, plus radars and a Strela-10. Russia also claims an unverified laser has downed hundreds of Ukrainian drones. Treat the laser the way air defenders treat every unverified kill tape: interesting, not proven.

Flight III is doing the work of two ships

The Navy says an Arleigh Burke Flight III with SPY-6(V)1 and Aegis Baseline 10 can do the air and ballistic-missile defense work of two Flight IIA destroyers. USS Ted Stevens is the example they are pointing at. Separate from that, the Navy is running a compressed Terminal Stage Interceptor effort — industry self-funding, modular design — to replace Standard Missile in the terminal layer, and is still pushing high-energy lasers from demo to a real magazine.

IBCS, LTAMDS, and the boom

RTX says Patriot, AMRAAM, and LTAMDS orders are reshaping Raytheon growth. Northrop says the missile-defense boom now runs from IBCS exports and PAC-3 production to Golden Dome. IBCS is being sold as the thing that ties Patriot, THAAD, and the next sensors into one Army network — 34 successful flight tests, 44 intercepts by late August. KBR won a NATO contract to accelerate Patriot-to-IBCS integration. Lockheed showed an AI battle manager on Guam that fuses Aegis and IBCS.

Indo-Pacific · 17–26 August 2026 · Australia test 30 July

Guam gets a Patriot battalion. Australia already shot.

A new Patriot battalion is slated to reinforce Guam within months. Lockheed’s Guam AI battle manager is the software layer trying to make Aegis and IBCS talk fast enough for a Chinese salvo. Australia live-fired its Medium-Range Ground-Based Air Defense prototype at Woomera during Taipan Strike 26 — CEA radar to virtualized Aegis to shooter. Japan scrambled after a North Korean ballistic shot on 6 August.

Low-cost interceptors are no longer a briefing slide

The Army is running competitions for a Low-Cost Interceptor, a Future Interceptor, Joint Forcible Entry Radar, and M-SHORAD Increment 4. X-Bow is on an ~$11 million effort aimed at an anti-ballistic shot under $750,000 — about a fifth of a top-tier Patriot. Lockheed is selling a layered counter-drone architecture (kinetic, electronic, directed energy) because you cannot spend a PAC-3 on every quadcopter. That is the SHORAD lesson from Ukraine, written in American program language.
